hello friends and enemies! this week i went to Las Vegas for the first time, where everything is fucking insane. michelin starred restaurants in every hotel, slot machines in the airports, and the biggest dispensary in north america apparently. sadly, i was not able to see any of the vast array of residencies. residencies that include the talents of Barry Manilow, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkslon, Rod Stewart, and most importantly, New Kids On The Block.

still, i was able to dig up some good music for ya. but first here is a country song comprised completely of country artists saying “cold beer.”

CEONCERT TICKETS

Hayley Williams did the thing

i’m going to tell you something that you already know: getting concert tickets to popular artists is akin to traversing one of the seven circles of hell. the purchasing experience is expensive and unfair and plagued.

listen. artists who go on tour, especially the stadium-filling ones, have some sway in the policies that govern the sales of their tickets. they can decide whether or not to allow:

  • ticket resale

  • how much resale tickets are allowed to sell for,

  • tickets transfer policies

  • etc etc etc.

why wouldn’t every artist want fair ticketing policies? capitalism! ticket policies that favor promoters/ticket resale markets will net better rev-share deals for the artists. and some artists prefer making money. so be it!

but for a long time, i’ve advocated for artists to take the high road and adopt a very simple policy: only allow tickets to be re-sold for face value. and BOOM! the scalping incentive is evaporated. do people ever do this? hello no!

but i’m happy to report that Hayley Williams is here to save the day. she announced a tour and has some fascinating restrictions to kick scalpers to the curb:

  1. everyone has to register for the presale with a verified email and can only buy 4 tickets

  2. tickets can only be resold for face value, and can only be sold once (!!!)

  3. tickets cannot be transferred between accounts

  4. tickets cannot be listed on 3rd party marketplaces

inevitably, there will be those who get tricked into buying tickets that don’t exist, but i find this to be a fascinating experiment. thank you Hayley for trying to do the thing
