hey you! yes, you! welcome! itās been a busy week in the music industry, with Avant Gardnerās delayed opening fiasco and of course the Diddy trial. my lord, that Diddy trial.
meanwhile, this week i saw Squid in concert for the fourth time, watched The Game starring Michael Douglass (loved it,) and marveled at Kellogg Diner as they shamelessly blasted Katy Perry while i tried to enjoy a fried chicken biscuit. shame, Kellogg. shame!
remember that all typos are intentional just to make sure youāre paying attention.
OPENING ACTS
this week in music stuff
the Trump administration is investigating Bruce Springsteen and Beyonce for performing at Kamala events because apparently there isnāt anything else to do that is more important
Salt N Pepa are suing UMG and UMG was petty and took their songs off of Spotify because of course they would
a delightful Japanese music video from World Order because why not!?
hoobastank hates their fans which is not surprising apparently
JUST A THOUGHT
hey itās 2013 again
okay so just an observation but it would appear it is 2013 once more. more and more, when i look at the bands releasing tracks these days, iām seeing names that i first learned to love when i was also learning calculus.
need receipts? bands who have dropped albums this year include Lucius, tUnE-yArDs, Arcade Fire, Beirut, Mumford & Sons, The Head and the Heart, and fricken REBECCA BLACK!? Rebecca not included, weāre seeing a resurgence of millennial indie-folk-pop in our playlists and on our concert calendars.
now listen, these albums are releasing to varying degrees of success. Mumfordās album faceplanted, Arcade Fireās album received a resounding chorus of people shrugging and saying āmehā and this is probably the first youāre hearing of Luciusās new album. but i suspect this is a part of the plan. weāve entered the ānostalgiaā phase of the millennial cultural lifecycle.
while some of these albums are not that bad at all, many are excuses to get on the road again and get that sweet sweet concert money from the folks who are now in their 30s and have marginally more money to spend.
so to my millennial comrades, i hope you enjoy seeing Dr. Dog, or Jackās Mannequin, or Guster, or Fitz and the Tantrums, or Dispatch, or The fuckinā Fray this summer. iām not above it, iāll be there too :)
THE MORE YOU KNOW
directors who also make music videos
yeah so as i mentioned, this weekend i watched David Fincherās The Game. a preposterous film from a very serious director. the same director responsible for bangers such as Fight Club, The Social Network, and Se7en just to name a few.
but you want to know something crazy about our man David Fincher? between 1984 and 2013, he has directed 57 music videos. impressive to say the least.
acts heās collaborate with include Billy Idol, Patty Smyth, Rick Springfield, and fricken Paula Abdul. to get even more specific, Paula Abdul and Fincher have made a whopping 5 music videos together. straight up.
Vulture was kind enough to put together a list of his best videos, but you should know that the music video to feature film pipeline is stronger than youād expect. famously, Silence of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme also directed the Talking Heads live concert film Stop Making Sense (in addition to so. many. Bruce Springsteen music videos.)
Other directors with a strong history of music videos include:
Martin Scorsese (Michael Jackson)
Michael Bay (Meat Loaf, because of course)
Spike Jonze (Weezer & The Beastie Boys)
Sofia Coppola (Phoenix, The White Stripes, The Flaming Lips)
just to name a few! while Fincher remains the most prolific (by a long shot), it makes sense that a number of notable directors cut their teeth in music videos, since they are essentially short films with much more pizazz. TIL.
NEW RELEASES
what iām listening to this week
INDIE VIBE ROCKšš really really good - a mellow sound that makes me nostalgic for the 80ās, while sounding fresh for today ā standout tracks: āSole Obsessionā āWeak In Your Lightā āI Will Never Learnā |
ALBUM
front to back
an album where you can bet your bottom dollar that every song is fantastic
CANADIAN ART ROCKto be honest, iām not even sure how i found Mauno. perhaps they found me. but alas, these Canadian rockers create some of the most emotional art rock with the softest vocals youāve ever laid your ears on. |
